Canon Cartridge Color Positions: Here’s the Explanation

Canon Cartridge Color Positions: Here’s the Explanation

Canon printers use multiple cartridges in different colors to ensure accurate and sharp print results. Each cartridge slot has a specific position, so they must be installed in the correct order.

Installing Canon cartridges in the wrong color positions can result in faded prints or inaccurate colors. To avoid such mistakes, please refer to the following guide!

Canon Cartridge Color Positions: Here’s the Explanation

Canon Cartridge Color Positions

The color layout for Canon cartridges, such as the CL-811 and PG-811, forms an inverted triangle pattern beneath the protective sticker. The color arrangement is as follows:

  • Top or center: Magenta (red)
  • Bottom left: Cyan (blue)
  • Bottom right: Yellow

Peel back or puncture the sticker to reveal the sponge-filled color ports on the cartridge. Ensure that the refill needle is inserted into the correct color port to prevent the inks from mixing.

It is recommended to refill with a moderate amount of ink—approximately 2 to 3 milliliters per color. Overfilling may cause the ink to leak or spill onto the exterior of the cartridge.

How to Refill Ink in Canon Printers

Follow these general steps to refill the ink in various Canon printer models:

  1. Turn on the printer and wait until the indicator light stops flashing, then gently press the cartridge to remove it.
  2. Remove the sticker label on the top of the cartridge to locate the injection points; be careful not to touch the yellow chip on the bottom of the cartridge.
  3. Use the needle provided with the refill kit to open the cartridge ports, then inject the ink slowly—do not overfill, as this may cause spills.
  4. Reseal the ports, reinsert the cartridge into the printer, and allow the printer to perform its cartridge detection/scanning process.
  5. Avoid touching the yellow chip on the bottom of the cartridge during the refill process. This component is responsible for reading cartridge information; any damage to the chip can interfere with the printer's performance.

How to Clean a Canon Printer After Refilling

Once the refill process is complete, the printer should undergo a "head cleaning" cycle to ensure optimal print quality. There are two methods you can use:

  • Via the printer software in Windows: Open the Print or Print Setup menu, go to Properties or Options, select the Utilities tab, and click on Head Cleaning.
  • Via the printer’s control panel: Ensure the power light is on and the ink light is off, then press and hold the ink button for three seconds to initiate the print head cleaning process.

Do not turn off the printer while the light is still flashing, as this may interrupt the cleaning process and risk damaging the printer's components.

Once the light stops flashing, print a nozzle check pattern to verify that the print head is clean. If the printout appears clear and consistent without any broken lines, the cleaning process has been successful.
