When checking our printer, we ran into issues after switching which port the printer was plugged into, which required us to uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers.

Setting up the printer is relatively easy, and everything is contained within the printer vehicle driver itself. Most notably, you can manage reducing design and drawer kick from the driver. This is excellent when working with software that may not have full receipt printer compatibility, such as web-based point-of-sale applications.

Publish rate was quick, at virtually 8" per second for single-shade settings, with speeds diminishing for 2-color settings. Though other printers in its class boast speeds of virtually 10" per second, the difference would only be noticeable on extremely long printouts. The car cutter prints fast and cleanly, leaving a small tag on the left side to link invoices as needed.

Layout and attributes

The HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf is matte black, lending it a bit more of a consumer inkjet appearance than your typical grey or beige company printer. It's likewise small and light for a printer, measuring 12 inches high, 17 inches wide, and 10.5 inches deep, and weighing 18 extra pounds. Two cutouts on each side serve as handles, adding to the printer's portability. As is frustratingly common, HP does not include a USB or Ethernet cord in the box.

HP's Smart Install application makes it straightforward to set up the LaserJet Pro M1212nf. Plug it into a wall, connect it to your COMPUTER (via USB), turn on the printer, and a few mouse clicks later, you're done. 

Smart Install loads drivers and software applications kept in the printer's memory. After running our tests on a Windows 7machiner, we tried linking it to a MacBook and found that Smart Install did not work, which is why HP likewise throws a CD into the package.

Setting up the printer with an Ethernet cable is virtually as easy as connecting it directly. As with USB installation, you can use either the included CD or Smart Install. We opted for the latter. 

First, you have to print an arrangement record using the printer's control panel by pressing the arrangement switch (the one with the wrench symbol), then using either of the arrow keys to select "Reports" from the Main menu, and finally selecting "Config report." The printer will print two web pages of setup details, one of which lists the printer's IP address. 

Type the address into the browser of a computer on your network, and on the resulting Web page, click the HP Smart Install tab. From there, click the eco-friendly Download switch to install the software. After a quick download, the printer will print an examination page confirming it's connected to your network.

After you set up the HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf, you'll discover it's a thoughtful officemate. Energy Star-qualified, it doesn't waste electrical energy, and it's fairly quiet during operation.

During operation, a two-line LCD standing display keeps you informed, together with three condition lights. A numeric pad rests below the LCD display, and there are also two buttons for beginning a copy or fax job. 

There isn't a check switch, making scanning a two-trip procedure: place the materials to be checked on the flatbed scanner, return to your workdesk to start the scan, then head back to the scanner to fetch the checked documents. Luckily, the LaserJet Pro M1212nf is compact, so you'll likely find a place for it beside your workdesk.

The LaserJet Pro M1212nf can print in either 600-dots-per-inch or 1,200 dpi modes. A 150-sheet paper tray protrudes from the front of the printer, and a 35-sheet ADF rests above the flatbed scanner/copier at the top of the equipment. If your workplace prints large quantities each day, you'll find yourself refilling the paper tray commonly; 150 sheets is not a lot of paper. 

The HP LaserJet Pro 1606dn, a budget-friendly single-function mono laser, holds 250 sheets. The ADF is an extremely hassle-free function for active workplaces. We would have liked to see an integrated duplexer; however, we understand that an entry-level model can't have it all.

HP rates the printer's regular monthly duty cycle at 8,000 web pages, though the recommended monthly volume is 250 to 2,000. A substitute printer toner cartridge for the LaserJet Pro M1212nf costs $68 and yields 1,600 pages, which works out to an affordable 4.2 cents per sheet. 

Do note that the initial cartridge, as HP calls it, included with the printer is not fully filled. Large workplaces trying to find a shared workhorse will certainly need to spend more on more durable equipment, with a longer task cycle, higher-capacity toner, and lower cost-per-page figures.

Control board

The control board, which can be locked in any one of four settings, is neatly designed with a 2-line by 16-character mono LCD, 3 sign lights, a numerical pad for entering telephone numbers, and a collection of 11 other buttons to regulate food selection navigation, check and copy parameters.

The paper input tray folds beneath the device's front panel, and HP offers a paper stop extender if you intend to load short paper. The equipment can take anything from 76 x 127 mm up to something larger than A4. Paper feeds out to a tilted paper rest over the input tray, which needs to be expanded if you do not want documents to spill onto the flooring

There's no cover to the input tray, which is a little strange, as you're much less likely to eliminate paper and close an all-in-one between print tasks than you are with an individual printer.

Connectivity & Maintenance

At the back are outlets for USB 2.0, Ethernet, a phone line, and an optional third-party mobile. To install the integrated drum and toner cartridge, you lift the scanner section, which is supported by a strong spring. This admits to the top of the printer, which folds up to give access to the cartridge. Given the equipment's density, installing and replacing cartridges is very easy.

Small and Mighty

Measuring 10.0 by 16.4 by 19.8 inches (HWD) and weighing 15 pounds, the ET-4760 is smaller than most of its straight rivals, including the Canon Pixma G4210, the HP OfficeJet Pro Premier, and the Epson WorkForce ET-4750. Despite its small size, the ET-4760 still manages to cram in a 250-sheet paper cabinet and a 30-sheet auto-duplexing automatic file feeder (ADF). 

This version is notably different from past Epson models in that it's off-white rather than the black we're used to seeing from this company. (It's also offered in the standard Epson black.)

Walk-up functions, such as making copies, scanning to or printing from the cloud, sending faxes, and making configuration changes, are managed via the ET-4760's 2.4-inch touch-screen display, which, aside from the Power and Help buttons, serves as the entire control panel.

You may find it especially useful, however, to access certain functions, such as tracking consumables and creating usage records, from the ET-4760's built-in site, a feature offered on almost all printers nowadays.

As pointed out, the ET-4760's paper input capacity consists entirely of a single 250-sheet drawer, with no override or multi-purpose tray. That's the same capability as all the other equipment listed below, except the Pixma G4210, which holds only 100 pages.

Epson rates the ET-4760's maximum monthly task cycle at 5,000 web pages and its recommended monthly print volume at 800 web pages, which is a little bit on the low side for a printer at this cost. The Epson ET-4750 and WorkForce ST-4000 are ranked the same. 

Canon doesn't release yield scores for its consumer-grade printers, and the HP Premier's duty cycle is 20,000 web pages higher than these EcoTank AIOs, with an advised monthly volume of 1,500 pages.

Alleviate of Use.

The ET-4760 struggled a bit in these statistics. This is the only choice we tested that doesn't have ink cartridges or toners. Instead, the ET-4760 has replacement ink containers that you pour into the printer's onboard storage tanks. 

The procedure isn't messy, yet it is a bit of a task. It then takes the printer 10 minutes to validate that ink has been replaced. This isn't a major criticism, given that you should only have to do this every three years, but it's worth keeping in mind.

We also experienced a jam on our first examination print, which also affected its initial setup rating. To initially set up the printer, you have to print several test web pages and select the best one, which also takes some setup time. 

The ET-4760's WiFi setup is uncomplicated, involving downloading software from Epson's website, but it is a little bit longer than the various other printers that we tested. The ET-4760's user interface is easy to use; nonetheless, the printer jams rather quickly. 

Cleaning jams isn't awfully hard, yet their frequency makes them a rather big hassle and lowers their overall rating in this classification.

Graphics/Photos.

The ET-4760 does just okay at printing images. While photos have an excellent variety of colors and respectable clarity, we did see occasional striping, and overall, images appear lighter than their originals. There were circumstances in which published images did not look like their originals, despite respectable print quality. 

For organization graphics, shades appeared slightly fainter than their on-screen equivalents, and text was understandable, albeit a little fuzzy. The general resolution was sharp, yet it lacked clarity for lighter colors. Ultimately, the color quality was decent yet irregular, with noteworthy, pale pink striping in the top half of some photos.

Eventually, while the ET-4760 can print color pictures, it doesn't stand out at generating them. If photo prints are not a high priority for you, this printer is still a wonderful buy thanks to its gradually reduced operating costs.

Style and attributes.

The layout and design of the Epson EcoTank ET-4760 All-in-One Cartridge-Free Supertank printer are familiar to anyone who has used a home or office all-in-one printer/scanner/fax machine in the last couple of years. There are a couple of features that set it apart from the majority, yet overall it's what you'd expect.

Lifting the top reveals the huge flatbed scanner, which offers high-quality scanning for anything that fits on the bed.

And over that is a flip-out automated document feeder. This permits you to set a stack of papers to be checked in a batch. In my testing, it succeeded with flat, crisp documents; however, it usually failed with double-fed papers that had been wrinkled (like expenses with multiple pages creased from mailing), which caused some pages not to be backed.

The backpack is relatively empty, aside from a huge easy-access compartment for papers, which they did have to use several times during my testing. It is really easy to get rid of, and jammed papers are conveniently accessible and easy to remove. Nonetheless, they had many more jams with conventional printer paper than they had anticipated (3 out of ~200 prints). 

They can't remember the last time my previous printer had the same issue with the same paper; I don't believe it happened more than once or twice before. Although the paper jams were easy to fix, it can be bothersome to have to reprint and unjam the paper. All of the paper jams accompanied double-sided printing.

The output tray pulls out and grabs printed records. If you neglect this, they splash out onto the floor/counter.

The paper tray is a single-tray event, yet easily adaptable to a variety of sizes. I evaluated mainly letter-size dimensions (8.5 x 11; printer paper and cardstock) and 4 x 6 photo prints.

The screen's angle can be readjusted or kept flat against the printer. I valued this; bright lights in my workplace create a strong glare on numerous electronics.
