Design & Handling
The Canon Pixma TR150 is the fruition of some creative style work. It's super quick and easy to raise the paper input and output trays for the procedure and fold them back in for storage. I like that it folds down so tiny that it can fit in a work desk drawer or a little carry-on bag.
The only catch is that the power supply is different and the paper can't be stored in the printer with the input tray shut, so these products need to be brought individually. However, the printer itself measures just 322 x 185 x 66mm and weighs only 2.1 kg, so it's incomparably portable.
The size and weight increase slightly if you opt for the Li-ion battery pack, either as part of a package with the printer or as an optional extra further down the line. The battery clips into a holder, and the full assembly screws onto the back of the printer. The battery can be charged through the printer's regular power adapter or via a USB charger connected to the printer's USB-C outlet.
The battery is good for 330 prints at full charge, and an exhausted battery takes about 2 hours 20 minutes to charge from the power pack or 5 hours from a 1.5 A USB battery charger. A row of 4 condition LEDs indicates charging progress and remaining battery life during use.
Setting the printer up for first use is fast and very easy. It comes with a print head in a separate bag, and 2 cartridges. After removing packaging pieces, it's a simple case of fitting the print head and inserting the cartridges.
When the print head and cartridges are fitted, an optional print head placement routine takes around 5 mins to complete. It's well worth running this to ensure maximum print quality.
The two ink cartridges contain a pigment-based black cartridge and a dye-based tri-color cartridge in cyan, magenta, and yellow. I like this 'crossbreed' arrangement as it allows robust, smudge-resistant mono text on simple paper, as well as smooth results on glossy and radiance image paper, much more on the latter.
As with Canon printers, the software driver for PC and Mac is really simple and intuitive, whether you're using a USB or Wi-Fi connection. For wireless printing, the TR150 is compatible with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct, the latter of which is used when you're not within range of a router.
Nevertheless, there's no Bluetooth or NFC connection. On the plus side, the printer works with the Canon PRINT app, AirPrint (iPhone), and Mopria (Android). I also like that you can store up to 5 different design templates in the printer, for example, company types and so on, and print them at the touch of a switch with no other tools being linked.
