Brother HL-2130 Detail

The top surface has a greatly indented output tray, complete with fold-out paper quit at the front and an additional flip-over tab further back. The just obvious function is to raise the output paper pile for easier handling.

The tray is a simple control board to the left of the output, making up 4 LEDs for printer toner, drum and various other mistakes, a Ready light and a switch marked Go, the main function which seems to publish a demonstration web page.

The main paper tray can take up to 250 sheets, a healthy and balanced arrangement in a small machine such as this, but there is also a single-sheet feed port for unique media simply over, where you can feed envelopes and strange paper dimensions. At the back is a solitary USB outlet, the just information link on the printer.

There is very little software provided with the HL-2130, but Video Device User interface (GDI) drivers are offered Home windows. OS X. Although there are still no Linux drivers on the provided CD, there’s at least a choice in the configuration food selection that takes you straight to Brother’s support web pages, where you can download the appropriate drivers.

We think it is about time Linux drivers consisted of software drivers disks from all printer manufacturers. Although many Linux distributions, an unexpected number use the common driver and consisting of them on the support disk would make installation simpler. Customers using Linux feel much less, such as bad connections.

Brother prices the HL-2130 at up to 20ppm, and that is not away from the note. A lot of this great efficiency is the relatively brief time it takes the printer to begin publishing. There is hardly any pre-processing, perhaps because of effective GDI drivers, so overall publish times, and much shorter documents are quite fast.

Our 5-page text document finished in 23s, giving a rate of 13ppm, but this enhanced to 17.4ppm on the 20-page test, which isn’t away from the specified speed. The five-page black text and video test were slightly slower than the straight text one, at 11.5ppm. Finally, a 15 x 10cm picture published on A4 using the printer’s finest 600 x 2,400dpi publish took 16s.

The prints that come out of the machine are well-formed and largely black. Its standard resolution of 600dpi suffices to produce efficiently spherical personalities, quite appropriate for business and home or trainee documents. The printer toner conserve setting does not decrease the publish quality a lot, so you can conserve money by using it as the default for daily publishing.

However, the printer isn’t so happy with greyscales, creating blotchy and banded locations of fill and finding it hard to differentiate between lighter and darker mid-tones. Also, when ramping the resolution up to the printer’s top 2,400 x 600dpi for the picture publish, these problems are still obvious in locations of stable tones, such as in skies.

Brother uses a two-part drum and printer toner cartridge, where the drum lasts for up to 12,000 web pages, and the printer toner cartridge needs changing every 1,000 web pages. Using the most affordable resources we could find for each of these consumables gives an expense for each ISO web page of 4.2p.

This is a fair bit greater than devices such as the Kyocera Mita FS-1320D. However, Kyocera Mita is popular for reduced operating costs. However, compared to very similarly-priced devices such as the Samsung ML-1865W, which costs about 3.6p each web page, this Brother machine appears quite pricey to run.
