Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F Review

Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F Scanner

Canon’s LiDE scanners are small, light, and easy to set up and use. Also better, despite all being flatbeds (so far), their small dimension allows you to treat them as mobile, at the very least to the degree that you could take them with you relatively quickly when you need to.

The CanoScan LiDE 700F suits the remainder of the LiDE models on all these details. It varies from various other present models because it can also scan movies.

Sadly, as a movie scanner, the 700F is… well… wimpy—so a lot so that it is easy to suggest that Canon should have left the feature out. Fortunately, the restrictions for movie scanning do not take anything far from the scanner’s abilities for various other kinds of scanning.

Any flatbed scanner is possibly a general-purpose scanner, of course. Still, models such as the 700F, which lack an automated document feeder, tend to concentrate on photos—a focus that has been proven in the software the 700F comes with.

Along with Twain and WIA driver, which will let you scan from almost any Windows program with a scan regulator, the just programs with the 700F are ArcSoft PhotoStudio variation six and Canon’s own MP Navigator EX scan energy.

The energy consists of an optical personality acknowledgment (OCR) feature. Still, it is limited purely to giving you the option of conserving a checked document in TXT or searchable PDF style. If you want more OCR features, such as having the ability to define several columns on a web page, you will need to buy a full-fledged OCR program individually.

It is also worth mentioning that the OCR feature didn’t work well in my tests. With Times New Roman, 12 factors were the tiniest dimension it managed to read without an error, and with Arial, it made mistakes also at 12 factors.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F Configuration and Basic Scanning

Establishing the LiDE 700F is typical for a scanner that obtains power over its USB cable television. Install the software, open the scanning aspect, and connect to the USB cable television with the scanner.

For my tests, the tester used a system operating Windows View. Inning accordance with Canon, the installation disc also consists of a driver and a complete set of software for Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Mac OS X variations 10.2.8 through 10.5.x.

Canon says that the programs on the disc also deal with Windows 7 and OS X 10.6. (Drivers for OS X 10.6 are currently available on the Internet website, and Windows 7 drivers will be available when Windows 7 is formally introduced.)

Scanning pictures and documents with the 700F is significantly easy. As with various other CanoScan LiDE scanners, consisting of the CanoScan LiDE 100, the 700F offers several approaches to giving a scan regulation.

If you use physical switches for one-touch scanning, you will find four on the front panel, identified Copy, Scan, PDF, and E-Mail. If you prefer onscreen options, you can choose from a comparable set of MP Navigator EX energy choices.

By default, scanning is fully automated in both situations, with the software operating a prescan; evaluating what it sees; immediately choosing setups for document kind (picture or document, for example), resolution, color setting (color or black and white), therefore on; and, finally, scanning.

If you prefer having some control over the scan, a checkbox allows you to inform the energy to introduce the scanner drivers so you can choose your setups.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F Scanning with the Drivers

Using the drivers allows you to prescan by hand, see the outcome, and after that, scan, with an option of 3 settings: an utterly automated setting just like a factor and fire feature in a video camera, a Basic location with simply a couple of setups, and an Advanced setting with advanced control over options such as saturation and color balance.

The drivers also offer a basic standard set of user-friendly electronic improvement features, beginning with the Backlight Adjustment I’ve anticipated in Canon drivers. Take a photo of someone lit from behind (the backlighting), and the face may come out with practically no information.

Canon’s drivers do an outstanding job of correcting for the backlighting—bringing out information in the face without shedding information in the colorful history.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F Scan Quality

The scan quality for pictures in my tests was more significant than appropriate in most, but not all, situations. Copies of most checked images published on an Epson PictureMate printer (our present Editors’ Choice) just weren’t quite a suit for the originals, but quickly great enough for pictures, most likely to friends and family. In one shot, however, a grey feline appeared partially blue.

Most scanners tend to transform the grey right into a blue-gray—one factor the picture belongs to our test suite—but this is the first scanner tester can keep in mind that transformed it unarguably blue.

Thankfully, as indicated in my tests, serious color integrity problems like this aren’t most likely to appear in many checks. In those situations where it does show up, you can correct the color without too much operation in most picture modifying programs.

Speed for picture scanning is reached speedy fast. The tester timed it at about 15 seconds for a 4-by-6 picture at 300 pixels each inch (PPI) and 25 seconds at 400 PPI.—Next: Movie Scanning.
