HP Officejet J4580 Review

The HP OfficeJet J4580 has a fundamental design, with a more business-like appearance than HP’s home-targeted Photosmart range. Unlike many low-end multifunctions, the HP OfficeJet J4580 All-in-One does not have a back paper tray but chooses instead for a 100-sheet front paper cassette, reducing the printer’s overall impact.

The tray is detachable but isn’t fully retracting, including considerable deepness to the printer when it’s attached. The HP Officejet J4580 All-in-One consists of an automated document feeder.

USB 2.0 is just a PC connection, but the multifunction also has a 33.6Kbps incorporated fax.

The control board on the Officejet J4580 is elementary and can be hard to use sometimes. Cancelling jobs can often take several secs, and starting routine cartridge cleaning and positioning must be done from the control board instead of software on the PC.

Our print speed tests often suit those numbers estimated by HP, but we found some inconsistencies when testing the Officejet J4580 All-in-One. HP claims the multifunction can print prepare mono documents at up to 28 web pages each min, but in our tests, it just managed 16.7ppm.

Similarly, HP’s estimated mono print speed of 9ppm when using normal quality was much faster than the 7.2ppm we balanced. Colour documents balanced 11.3ppm (prepare) and 3.2ppm (normal). It took approximately 20-21 secs for the first web page of a prepared document to print.

HP’s declared 4x6in picture print speed of 51sec was better than what we experienced; pictures took about a min to print. A4 images are a fair bit slower, taking approximately 3min to print. These aren’t the slowest print rates about — and the HP Officejet J4580 All-in-One handles to equal the more expensive Brother MFC-490CW — but the rates aren’t excellent.

Text in mono documents is of a good standard, and personalities are easily understandable if bolder than those more expensive printers produce. There’s a loss of clearness in a text when using a 7pt font style, but the multifunction keeps good quality when the text is more significant to 20pt. Colour precision was typically great in our document tests. However, red is over-saturated.

In picture prints, however, the colour combination overall is rather unsaturated. Colours lack the vividness often produced by inkjet printers; however, the unexpected lack of banding problems makes the Officejet J4580 a far better picture printer than expected. Still, it’s best to use this multifunction to print colour workplace documents instead of relying on it with your cherished family pictures.

The HP Officejet J4580 All-in-One provides scan presets that come from the control board and software. Its scan speed suffices fast, and the outcomes serve. When scanning at 600dpi, pictures are perhaps excessively light compared with the resource, but the information isn’t shed.
