HP Officejet Pro 8100 Review

Establishing the Officejet Pro 8100 on a PC is simple: Place the CD and follow the triggers. If you are using a Mac that runs Lion (OS X 10.7), you will probably need to browse HP’s website for the newest drivers; the ones on our installation CD didn’t support Apple’s latest and greatest. Of course, you can use OS X’s own Include Printer function to find the drivers, but HP should bring its installation software updated.

HP includes a nice touch to the Officejet Profesional 8100’s control board through a small front LCD for showing ink degrees, Wi-Fi condition when you are from paper. However, onboard switches are limited to eject switches and toggle switches for the ePrint cloud-printing feature and Wi-Fi.

Paper handling on the Officejet Profesional 8100 suffices for medium-volume printing, with a 250-sheet, bottom-mounted main tray, a 150-sheet output tray straight over it, and automated duplexing. In addition, an optional, $80 250-sheet paper tray (CQ696A) is available for the Officejet Profesional 8100; but at this writing, the tray is nearly difficult to find on HP’s website without help. The Officejet Profesional 8100 appears sturdily built, and it is more significant than most likely to outlive its one-year warranty. Additionally, HP will sell you a two-year extended solution/warranty prepared for just $25, which is reassuring. The comprehensive plan supersedes the standard procedure, but you can purchase it whenever within the first year-so. Of course, the longer you delay, the much more extended the full warranty.

Obtaining your documents published quickly is not a problem for the Officejet Profesional 8100. Monochrome web pages (mainly text, with a couple of simple grayscale videos) exit at a fast 12.5 web pages each min, while 4-by 6-inch pictures print at 4.6 ppm (well over average) to ordinary paper and 1.2 ppm (average) to shiny picture paper. Full-page illustrations print to glossy paper at about 0.6 ppm, which is slightly over average.

Output from the Officejet Profesional 8100 was typically excellent. The text looked sharp. However, it tended towards charcoal grey rather than black. Monochrome videos were attractive and had smooth shifts, however, of the same overall charcoal actors. The slightly oversaturated colors produced warm and pleasant nonhuman topics, but it gave Fleshtones an unnaturally ruddy look.

The Officejet Profesional 8100’s ink costs are outstandingly low-especially for the high-yield supplies. In addition, the unit ships with unique “configuration” variations of its standard-capacity cartridges that have extra ink for the initialization process, so you still obtain a complete readied to use for printing.

The standard-capacity cartridges cost you 2.6 cents for each black web page and 2.9 cents for each web page (CPP) color. Thus, a four-color web page costs an extremely affordable 11.3 cents. The high-yield XL supplies are also less expensive: 1.6 cents for monochrome web pages and 7.3 cents for a four-color web page.
