Brother MFC-J615W Review
All dressed up in high-gloss and distinctive black, this machine complies with the lines of many others in Brother’s profile, with the carefully sloping top panel sliding to a full-width control board throughout the front and integrating a 30-sheet Automated Document Feeder (ADF) for duplicates, checks and faxes.
Brother’s ADFs operate in the opposite instructions from most others, feeding on the top surface of the flatbed cover to a set of supports straight over. There is no reason this design should not work equally and the top-to-bottom approach used by most other manufacturers.
The control board is streamlined, with just the switches having to perform the machine’s several functions. There is a number pad on the left-hand side for fax dialling and passcode entrance when establishing a wireless link. To the right of the LCD panel are four illuminated switches for fax, check, copy and picture catch. To the right of these is a ruby of navigating keys, with an OK button in the centre, and on the extreme right are two switches for colour and mono jobs and a solitary quit key.
The widescreen LCD has an 81mm angled, slightly smaller sized than the 84mm screen that became a Brother trademark design. It is full colour as before and still take advantage of having the ability to show picture thumbnails and choice choices simultaneously side-by-side.
A 100-sheet ordinary paper cassette moves right into the front of the machine, and there is a 20-sheet picture paper tray mounted on its cover. To involve the tray, you need to take out the cassette and slide it ahead by hand – it is a pity it isn’t immediately selected when you decide to print pictures.

At the back to the left-hand side are the power input and two various other sockets for fax lines and third-party handsets. Still, the USB link needs to be reeved about inside the machine customarily, which is more uncomfortable than an outlet at the back.
Many individuals who buy the MFC-J615W will decide to connect via wireless and easy two-stage installation. You enter any security passcode to connect the printer for your wireless router, and after that, locate the printer from the configuration software on the PC you are using.
The driver is offered Windows and OS X, and Brother provides separate Linux support via direct downloads. There is also a duplicate of the company’s own multifunction collection and Nuance’s PaperPort 11SE.
Many printer companies have been captured in the spiralling buzz of print rates, but Brother is among the most awful for exaggeration. It claims speeds of 35ppm for black and 28ppm for colour, both in a fast preparation set. However, when we published our five-page prepare document, we just saw 9.1ppm, much less compared to a 3rd of the ranked speed. The printer managed 3.1ppm in black and 2.6ppm in colour in a typical setting, about a tenth of the declared rates.
Checks and duplicates are easy to set up and perform, and the quality of reviews at the 1,200dpi resolution serves for small workplace use; however, pictures experience some colour distortions. This is also noticeable in photocopies, which come through a lot paler than the originals where they’re taken.
Black text prints are OK; however, also to the nude eye, you can see harsh sides triggered by ink saturating right into the paper. This is more visible with strong personalities. Fast setting text, effectively prepared, is paler but still reasonably well-formed.
Our initial black text and colour visuals prints revealed a fair bit of banding, and the colours looked very sloppy. A complete clean of the colour goings, predominantly the yellow, sorted this out, but we stayed disappointed because this was a new machine and not one that had done a rounded of reviews. After cleaning, pictures appeared bright and well-balanced; however, shadowed locations were over-dark.
The MFC-J615W can take standard yield cartridges, giving operating costs of 2.4p for black and 9.2p the colour, at the best cartridge prices we could find on the Internet. The black cost is sensible for this course of the machine. However, the colour is slightly high in contrast with some of its competitors.
