HP LaserJet 1200 Review

Enhancing an advantage can be challenging, but in this situation, HP is successful admirably. The LaserJet 1200 repairs all the points we did not like about the 1100xi and provides better publish quality at much faster speeds–all for the exact low cost.

Hewlett-Packard’s LaserJet 1200 is positioned to change the HP LaserJet 1100xi, an inexpensive laser we’ve known and loved for its excellent publish quality and flexible copy/check accessory. Enhancing an advantage can be challenging, but in this situation, HP is successful admirably. The LaserJet 1200 repairs all the points we did not like about the 1100xi and provides better publish quality at much faster speeds–all for the exact low cost.

The LaserJet 1200s packed software consists of scanning and copying programs and ReadIris Professional OCR for turning checked documents right into editable text files. The printer’s drivers consist of some uncommon features, such as the ZoomSmart function, which works much like the zoom on a photocopier, and the question-mark symbol, which explains when specific drivers setups are not available (for instance, no N-up publishing is open when the zoom is set for 400 per cent).

Workplaces looking for a multifunction’s versatility might also value the LaserJet 1200’s photocopier/scanner accessory option ($149). This device, which rests in addition to the output tray, includes essential workplace functions to the machine, so you will not need to buy separate devices.

Much faster, better-looking output.

The LaserJet 1200 bested its precursor on all CNET Labs’ tests. It clocked 10.5 text web pages each min (ppm) at 600 dots each inch (dpi). While this speed is just about two-thirds of HP’s maximum claim of 15ppm, it is nonetheless the fastest of any individual laser CNET’s evaluated to this day. The LaserJet 1200 slowed down to about 8.3ppm when publishing mixed text and video, but it was still amongst the fastest we’ve evaluated.

Output quality was also better compared to output speed. Text examples we published looked excellent at 600dpi, with crisp, strong black lines on both serif and sans-serif font styles. At three- and five-point font style dimensions, letters had a somewhat moth-eaten quality, but this is not likely to be a problem for daily use, and enhancing the resolution to 1,200dpi refixed the problem.

On video tests, the LaserJet 1200 is just the second monochrome printer that CNET has evaluated to receive a rating of excellent (the various other printer is the HP LaserJet 2100TN). The LaserJet 1200 did a fine job on the line illustrations, gradients, and challenging grayscale photo aspects in our test document.

The HP LaserJet is also cost-effective. A 2,500-page substitute printer toner cartridge costs $62.50, which works bent on about 2.5 cents each page–about the standard for an individual printer. HP plans to offer a 3,500-page cartridge for $64 beginning in July 2001.
