Dell 1720 Review
The $350 Samsung ML-3051ND offers the same print quality but much faster text prints (and slightly slower video prints), a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray, and a straight pass-through. If these additionals deserve the $50, go for the Samsung. Or else, the Dell 1720dn is a great choice for its target market. If duplex printing and networking aren’t high concerns, the standard $200 Dell 1720 is a great option for the office.
Design
The Dell 1720dn is a blocky, charcoal grey printer with practical, all-business appearances. It stands 15.6 inches wide, 13.6 inches deep, and 10 inches high and evaluates simply greater than 25 extra pounds. It ships with a 250-sheet paper tray; however, you can expand the input capacity with an optional 550-sheet cabinet.

A port simply over the tray functions as the manual feed tray, where you can feed solitary sheets of media. It has flexible paper overviews of facilitating various feeding dimensions of the paper. The 1720dn does not have a straight pass-through, which is great for thicker media that may be troublesome for the printer’s rollers.
The Samsung ML-3051 has this feature. The printer’s control board is simple: simply a proceed switch and a terminate switch, as well as several LEDs to alert you to problems such as paper jams.
Dell offers both standard and high-capacity printer toners cartridges for the 1720 models and a use-and-return program that offers a discount rate to users who return invested cartridges. The standard cartridge yields about 3,000 web pages for $100 ($70 through use and return), and the high capacity variation yields about two times that number for about $130 ($90 through use and return).
Dell estimates that per-page costs are as reduced as 1.67 cents, which is excellent. The 1720 printers have a regular monthly duty cycle of about 25,000 web pages, making it great for a small to the medium-size work team.
Features
The Dell 1720 mono printer family offers 2 models: the base model costs $200, while the 1720dn (which we evaluated) costs $300. The 1720dn consists of integrated networking via Ethernet and an integrated duplexer for automated double-sided prints.
Both models feature a 366MHz CPU. The 1720 ships with 16MB of RAM, while the 1720dn ships with 32MB. Both are upgradeable to 144MB and 160MB, specifically. Both models also consist of USB and identical ports. Dell offers an optional wireless printer adapter for printing wireless over your network.
Efficiency
The Dell 1720dn kept up with the competitors. It produced black text web pages for 13.46 web pages each min (ppm). The slightly cheaper Lexmark E250dn was a little bit slower, and the slightly more expensive Samsung ML-3051ND was a little bit much faster.
The Dell beat both the Lexmark and the Samsung at video prints, spinning them out for 21.59ppm. It produced PowerPoint prints for 11.79ppm.
The Dell 1720dn didn’t disappoint with its print quality, either. The text was perfect, as it should be with a mono printer. The mono video web page was also sharp and detailed; however, some cross-hatching spoiled the picture. This defect isn’t unusual for printers, however. Overall, the print rates and quality of the printer make it great in shape for small workplace or work team atmospheres.
