Canon PIXMA MP490 Review
Overcurrent introduces Canon has decreased the dimension of its devices, so they appear much less like harmoniums and more like oversize jewelry boxes. The PIXMA MP490 is cased in high-gloss light grey and black and very wise it appearances too, when shut.
Bring up the paper tray support from the back and open up the front cover, which becomes the output tray, and it does not affect appearance quite as excellent but is still very practical. There is no separate paper tray underneath the machine, but the back tray works for ordinary and picture paper.
The Contact Picture Sensing unit (CIS) scanner is a single-sheet device but is both peaceful and fast and creates remarkably great pictures. It is also used in the automated printhead positioning process to scan back an examination print.
Turn up the cover to the control board, which is to the right of the scanner cover, and you will find it is equipped with a 45mm LCD. This is a brilliant little unit, excellent enough for picture thumbnails and showing food selections and condition messages – its primary function. The control board appears very just like those on the machine’s larger brother or sisters; other than that, the ‘ring’ control is a four-way switch and not a click-wheel.
Another flip-open cover in the right-hand front corner of the situation reveals three sd card ports, consisting of CompactFlash and Microdrive, however strangely, there is no PictBridge/USB outlet. It appears an unusual choice to proceed with support for a card style mostly deserted by customer devices while omitting a link that works with almost any electronic video cam. DSLR users might value the thought, but they’re not likely to print straight from an sd card after that.
The just outlet behind the machine is for a USB cable television. However, Canon proceeds to offer a straight mains power link, so avoiding the troublesome external obstructs HP, its main rival, proceeds to use.
This is a twin-cartridge printer with solitary black and tri-color cartridges, both of which clip right into place in the head provider, with a minimum of initiative. The usual extensive set of applets for basic scanning, printing, and OCR are provided, and there is a valuable Internet applet to squeeze Internet web pages into an A4 sheet.
Canon is producing the initiative to quote more reasonable print rates using the ISO standard to measure them. It claims 8.4ipm and 4.8ipm for black and color web page pictures, specifically. On our five-page black and color documents, we saw rates of 5.7ppm and 2.2ppm, which is still some way off the declared prices, but most of this is extended processing time before the print starts.
On our initial five-page black text test, where we had currently lined up the print goings and been through the ink-charge cycle, the printer fiddled about for 35 secs before the first sheetfed.

On the 20-page, black text print, the speed increased to 6.9ppm, a bit better than the ranked speed. We think it is unreasonable for all printer manufacturers to omit this processing time, especially when printers and all-in-ones are spending much longer and much longer before beginning to deliver asked for web pages. A single-page color copy took 35 secs. However, this was the best situation from several duplicates, where the lengthiest copy time was 53 secs.
There was quite an inconsistency between picture prints from PC and SD card, too, but this was because our PC print (1:33) remained in the best print setting, while the image from a picture card (0:54) remained in standard print setting.
Print quality is very excellent for an entry-level all-in-one. Black text is clean and with hardly any ink spread out. However, there’s the periodic jitter in between lines of text if you appearance closely. Colour prints on ordinary paper are bright and thick while still preserving a great range of hues. Also, the color copy does pretty well on this test, with just minor lightening of colors in the document.
Picture prints are also well recreated, with dark information, great all-natural colors, and very smooth gradations. Tester thought we noticed small yellow actors from some of our test prints when first published, but this discolored and became more all-natural as the ink thoroughly dried out.
Both ink cartridges are just consumables in this machine. Although we cannot find them at quite the prices they went to when we evaluated the PIXMA MX320, we still calculated worths of 4.36p for an ISO black web page and 9.36p for a color web page, both consisting of 0.7p for paper. While not the most affordable numbers we’ve seen from an inkjet all-in-one, these aren’t bad, provided the reduced asking price of the machine itself.
